New generation leads Gelder and Kitchen

We are delighted to announce that Tony Anson has taken over as Managing Partner of the practice. Tony, 43, formally took over the reins on 1 March.

Tony has worked at the partnership since 1988, firstly as an architectural assistant and then, after gaining his professional qualifications in 1990, as a project architect and associate. He became a partner of the practice in 1998.

Tony is keen to be as involved as possible with the development of the city of Hull, and this is demonstrated by his involvement in Hull Business Forum, One Hull and the Humberside Association of Neighbourhood Watch Groups. He was also a participant in the Common Purpose Programme, which delivers leadership development programmes with a strong focus on the benefit to their communities.

“As a practice with a large national client base, much of our work is done outside of East Yorkshire,” explains Mr Anson, “either from Hull or from our other offices in St Albans and Richmond, North Yorkshire. The redevelopment of Hull and the investment in new facilities in both the pubic and private sector is a great opportunity for us to increase our work locally.

“We were very fortunate to be able to design and project manage the build of the new Hull Community Church on Newland Avenue, and I hope that many more opportunities like this will arise in the future.”

The practice works throughout the UK, with particular expertise in the healthcare sector, for both the NHS and private providers. Gelder and Kitchen also continues the tradition of building flour mills from its founder, Sir Alfred Gelder, so that the partnership can boast that some of the clients have been on the books for over a century.

Tony takes over from David Nurse, who has been Managing Partner for the past three years, enabling David, in the new role of Senior Partner, to focus more on the training and development needs of the practice’s younger employees.

“We have a tremendous team of young architects, engineers, project managers and quantity surveyors,” says David, “and this frees up my time to concentrate on ensuring they benefit from a full programme of professional development.  Tony is an excellent example of somebody who has worked his way up the practice through hard work and dedication. My new emphasis on training will help to ensure that, in time, we have yet another generation of partners to whom Tony himself can then hand over!”
